Lesson 30 | God’s Law on idolatry
Summary of key points
- God first laid down His law in written format to Moses, when He made a covenant with the Israelites.
- A covenant is a permanently binding agreement between two parties that comprises promises made to one another.
- Like Himself, God’s law is perfect, trustworthy, right, clear, pure, everlasting, true, and fair.
- The old covenant relationship required blood sacrifices for sin made by priests.
- When Jesus came, He made a blood sacrifice on the cross for our sins and became our High Priest. This became the new covenant.
- The new covenant does not abolish the old covenant Law, which covers many, many warnings against worshipping idols.
- Jesus has said, “I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets… not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.”
- The Bible shows us that the worship of idols is really the worship of demons, which is forbidden in God’s Law. God calls us adulterous if we worship idols/demons.
- Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit under the new covenant. We cannot participate in the worship of idols/demons.
Group reflection questions
- What is the purpose of having a legal system?
- What would happen if there were no laws on earth?
