Watch: Rachel’s testimony

Rachel believed she was a devout Christian until she learnt about the spiritual traps of witchcraft and other seemingly harmless activities, that led to demonic oppression by evil spirits in her life. In an inner healing and deliverance prayer, Rachel exercised her authority in Jesus to cast out those evil spirits in Jesus’ name. Praise God!

One of the spirits we dealt with was the spirit of witchcraft, which was associated with a kindergarten Halloween musical where I played the role of a green witch. 


I came to realise that the seemingly harmless practice of dressing up for Halloween was deeply rooted in demonic rituals.

Hi, my name is Rachel.

After recommitting my life to the Lord six years ago, I decided to give myself fully to God and did all the “Christian stuff,” like serve in all kinds of ministries, joining discipleship groups, and practiced many spiritual disciplines. 

However, deep within, I felt there was something blocking me from entering into a closer relationship with God, and that I had to maintain all my “spiritual activities,” in order to grow in intimacy with God. 

I felt like I had to constantly push myself to gain God’s approval and love, despite knowing that it is by His grace, that I am saved. 

Little did I know, the blockages had to do with my past involvement with the occult, generational curses, and relationship with my mum. 

Growing up, my curiosity led me to venture into all kinds of “dangerous” things – from the ouijia board, playing the game “Bloody Mary”, entering into a blood pact with my best friend whose parents were practicing witchcraft, which unknowingly opened the doors for evil spirits to oppress me. 

Before joining a discipleship course at church, I was completely naïve and ignorant of the spiritual impact of these activities, and thought that I had nothing associated with the works of the enemy. I saw myself as a devout Christian who was committed to walk in the righteousness of God. Throughout the course, God opened my eyes to understand spiritual realities and the way Satan works, particularly how he “masquerades himself as an angel of light,” according to 2 Corinthians 11:14. 

I was surprised to learn that I had foolishly let myself fall into the traps of the enemy, and these things had been hindering my relationship with God. 

For example, I would easily doze off during sermons, my mind occasionally went blank during prayer, I had nightmares and experienced sleep paralysis, where I have seen evil spirits attacking me. 

Around that time, I was also reading the book, They Shall Expel Demons, by Derek Prince, which uncovered many fears and misconceptions associated with demons. I was convicted by the Holy Spirit that I should go for an inner healing and deliverance prayer.   

At the beginning of my prayer, my counsellors were led to water baptise me – to which, the evil spirits that had gained a foothold in my life, trembled in fear and manifested themselves physically through loud noises. 

Throughout the prayer time, I was reminded of my authority in Christ and commanded these spirits to leave me, as I repented and renounced the sins of my past and of my family.

As we continued to pray, I bowed my head down in submission to God and saw an image of myself walking through a veil, leaving the darkness behind and into God’s brightly lit Kingdom. I felt immediately lighter and set free from the bondages of darkness. 

After the prayer session, God blessed me with the gift of speaking in tongues, which was a gift I really desired. 

In his book, Derek Prince mentioned on numerous occasions where the gift of tongues was released upon those who have been delivered from evil spirits, and that it is one of the signs accompanying believers — “… in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues” (Mark 16:17 ESV) and that … “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26) 

Since that prayer,  I continued to read extensively about spiritual realities through books and courses. I was affirmed by these truths; that God has given us all the authority in Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:12 says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Luke 10:19 says, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. (Luke 10:19)

God has blessed me with a few opportunities to practise what it means to walk in His authority, such as praying for my mother and my home.

Before getting married, I lived with my mother, who because of the brokenness in her life, had severe anxiety and depression, and worshipped all kinds of false idols. 

One night, my mum cried out for help and asked me to pray for her. She was in a panic attack, out of breath, and described that her upper body was in “knots”, as if she was being strangled by something. 

I sensed this was a spiritual attack and commanded the evil spirits to leave her body in Jesus’ name, after which my mum said she experienced intense heat, like fire, spreading across her chest, and she was set free from the attack. 

I didn’t know what spirits we were dealing with, but I knew I didn’t have to fear for Jesus has defeated the enemy. 

In preparation for marriage, God blessed my husband, then fiancé, with a flat. It was 51 years old. On our first visit to the apartment, we both sensed spiritual heaviness and darkness, and discovered that the previous owner had worshipped many false idols and the occult objects were still there. 

The second time we visited, we prayed over the apartment and destroyed the occult objects. Both of us felt physical sensations as we casted out spirits related to guanyin, buddhism, and new age. 

The apartment immediately looked brighter after we prayed and we invited Jesus to be the Lord of our home.

These are just a couple of stories of how God has opened my eyes to the authority and freedom I have in Jesus, to break free from the spiritual bondages of my past, my family, and even the territories He has called me to set foot on. 

I am constantly reminded, as 1 Peter 5:8-9 says, to always “Be alert and of sober mind. For the enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8-9)

I started this journey feeling scared about the spiritual, thinking evil spirits had nothing to do with me. Now, I am empowered to walk in Jesus’ power, truth, and light, holding onto the promise in 1 John 4:4 that says “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
