Lesson 23 | Uproot our fears

Course
Note: Please allow yourself one hour to watch and reflect on this lesson.
Summary of key points
  1. Fear can cause physical sensations in our bodies that we can react instinctively to.
  2. Our fears can end up ruling our thoughts, reactions, choices, physical health, spiritual life, and family life. It is neither God or we who are in control, but our fears.
  3. Some fears are based on our imaginations, with thoughts beginning with “what if…?”
  4. We need to rededicate our gift of imagination back to God for the Holy Spirit’s use.
  5. Our fears can be triggered by unhealed emotional wounds from past bad experiences, which cause us to form self-centred inner vows beginning with “I can’t …”
  6. We need to replace such inner vows with God’s truths and forgive ourselves or anyone who caused us to make up such inner vows.
  7. There is a right place for fear, that is to fear God. The fear of God has many benefits and is a sign of a true believer who is saved.
Group reflection questions
  1. What are some of your personal takeaways from this study and testimony?
  2. What is fear? Is fear always unhealthy? How do we contrast fear which is not from God versus a godly sense of fear?
  3. Can we quiet down and ask the Holy Spirit to help reveal what our fears are? Are they fearful imaginations or fearful inner vows? Can we jot down our list of fears?
  4. What are the circumstances that led to such fears and how did these fears creep into your life? Would it also be worldly teaching and culture which promoted your fears? Please ask the Holy Spirit to reveal all this to you.
  5. What safety boundaries do you need to install around your thoughts?
